More than a bakery, more than a deli—The Black Sheep is an Amherst tradition, baking from scratch and bringing people together for nearly four decades.

Owner, Nick Seamon

Since 1986, Nick Seamon has been the heart behind The Black Sheep, bringing his vision of a community-centered bakery and deli to Amherst.

Driven by a passion for good food, social justice, and local engagement, Nick has long positioned The Black Sheep not just as a place to eat, but as a gathering spot and a platform for ideas.

He is committed to baking all breads and pastries from scratch each morning and is intentional in selecting organic, fair-trade, and ethically sourced ingredients.

Over the years, The Black Sheep has become known for its political edge and community activism. Nick has not shied away from expressing his views, hanging signs in windows supporting causes like Bernie Sanders, and hosting government representatives for community dialogue with Congressman Jim McGovern.

Nick’s most proud moment was playing host to farm labor activist legend, Cesar Chavez.

He sees the deli as a “community intersection,” where food, conversation, and engagement meet.

The business has endured through challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, when Nick oversaw a temporary closure and later a reopening with expanded offerings. During that time, he strengthened ties with his Black Sheep Farm in Leverett, bringing in more in-house produce and preserved goods.

Beyond Amherst, Nick’s influence has extended — for example, donated Black Sheep baked goods and recipes were shared in a cultural exchange with Eastern Kentucky, helping spark a community-based bakery there.

Nick also places importance on how staff are treated, striving to create a workplace where employees feel responsibility, respect, and share in the vision of the business.

With decades of commitment, Nick Seamon has nurtured The Black Sheep into more than a deli — it’s a local institution, a meeting place, and an example of how a small business can combine artistry, service, and social purpose.
